so good to be back

Hello Everyone!

It has been quite a while since I have posted anything. I think I have been in a "creative funk" (at least that's what I am calling it). Whoa My Darling is moving in a new and exciting direction! While I love posting about the incredible things other people do, I would really like to post about things I have been dabbling in.

BAKING! Every time I see a cute little bakery somewhere, all I can think about is how fun it would be to own my own bakery. The next best thing: filling my recipe box with lovely and delicious recipes! This process includes trying countless recipes, some tweaking, and a TON of butter. Slowly my recipes are coming together and I can't wait to share them with you.

Some other fun things I have been trying my hand at are wire lace and resin jewelry-so much fun. I see some great tutorials in the near future.

summertime

Finally! I have been trying to post and nothing was showing up. Now that I am [hopefully] back, I am so happy to be finished with the hardest semester of my life. Now that it is officially summer time for me, I really want to throw an outdoor party. Look at all these pictures that would be lovely to do!

How great are these things? I really need to find a reason to have a party (like I really need an excuse) so I can try these things! Last week, we went to the garden shop and I bought the first flowers for my first garden ever. I am excited to start one, with poppies! Once the weather is nice, I am hitting the garden. Next on the list...peonies!

whoa my giveaway

I know I know, finally! I am very proud to announce the first Whoa My Darling giveaway.

The winner will receive a set of 3 handmade folded cards (and envelopes). They are 3.5 inches by 5 inches. Simple cards that are blank of the inside.

To enter: All you have to do is comment on any post on the Whoa My Darling blog (one entry per person). The winner will be chosen at random on May 1st. Please check back to see if you won. This is open to all countries!

I am very excited for the first giveaway! I have been having trouble finding time to blog with work and school which is funny because I have found the next book I am going to read. It is definitely the longest book I have ever attempted. I have heard the book is wonderful as well as the movie. Any ideas? It is Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. This is going to be quite a challenge to get through all one thousand five hundred odd pages. But I intend to do so! Have you ever read it?

I finally finished the book Water for Elephants which was absolutely wonderful! I am so excited to go see the movie this weekend. I recommend you read it.

This picture is a bit random, but I have become obsessed with the DIY network on t.v. and really want to decorate a home now. So I am loving the white tile backsplash in this kitchen.

diy:: diaper cake

Last week I made a diaper cake to send to my cousin for her baby shower. It was so hard waiting to put the pictures up, but I had to wait for the shower. This was my first attempt at making a diaper cake and I think it came out quite well!

Since I was mailing my diaper cake across the country, I made it a little bit smaller than most that I have seen. I used 100 diapers, 4 receiving blankets, 6 onesies, 2 bibs, 2 hats, 2 pairs of socks, 1 security blanket, ribbon, and various items to add on ( teething ring, book, pacifiers, rattles).

The first step is creating the ring of diapers. I used 4 different sized cake pans and spiraled the diapers inside longways (that sounds confusing-the picture will help). I did this until I couldn't fit any more diapers and tied it with ribbon to stay.

Then, I removed them from the cake pans and used safety pins to attach a receiving blanket to each tier (I folded the receiving blankets to match the height of the diapers). Once I was ready to stack them, I put a wrapping paper tube down the center to keep the tiers together. You don't need to worry about your safety pins showing because they will be covered up.

Now begins the fun part! Start draping any onesies, bibs, hats, and socks that you have. I spread mine apart and varied them between tiers making sure I could still see the cute receiving blankets! There is no need to pin them on because next, wrap ribbon around each tier to hold everything together. Make sure to cover your pins!

Now add any teething rings, rattles, books, or pacifiers you have. I also created bows from the ribbon and added them to various tiers.

Finally, for the top I stuffed the security blanket into the first tier to cover the diapers.

Now it's all ready to go!

do-it-yourself

Tonight I started thinking about thinks that I really like.

...mostly just things I don't really need, but want.

One thing I am terrible at is starting projects and then forgetting about them. I have had some oilcloth to make myself a lunch tote for over a month now. I will have it finished by the weekend and I will put the tutorial on here!

This will be the first of many DIY projects to come.

a place to call home

Lately, I have been getting very excited about decorating. Maybe it's because many of my friends are becoming homeowners. There is just something about dark hard wood floors and tiled walls that make me happy.

Take these and add some dishes from Crate & Barrel and Anthropologie and I will be oh so happy.

New Book!

Tonight before dinner, we went in a bookstore and while walking through the children's section I came across this book that became my instant favorite!

It is "A Sick Day for Amos McGee" by Philip C. Stead. The story is adorable and the illustrations are so lovely. Erin E. Stead did them with subtle colors and such great detail.

Seriously, when was the last time you saw a book this cute? I can't wait to come up with a lesson to go with it just so I can share it will the kids.

So talented!

"You are you, now isn't that pleasant?"

These weeks have just been flying by! With school and work I am having a hard time keeping up. We did go on a very wonderful mini vacation to Las Vegas. I must say I did not want to come home.

Today is one of my favorite days, it's Dr. Seuss' birthday! I wish today were one of my days in the classroom because helping kids make "Horton ears" would be much more fun than school and work. This only reminds me I need to work on adding to my collection of Dr. Seuss books!
